peru govt investing for public school library US $58.4 million

The Ministry of Education in Peru (Minedu) is investing about US$ 58.4 million to improve public high school libraries across the country, according to Andina news agency.

Minedu is embarking on a grand scale investment in improving public school libraries by investing in new books and the installation of libraries in pre-schools and primary schools.

“This is the first time after seven years that Minedu invests in the purchase of books to improve the learning process of high school students,” Director of Regular Basic Education Cecilia Ramirez toldAndina news agency.

“We have already set libraries up at some high schools. They are being equipped with encyclopedias, dictionaries, as well as literature and science books. This year we seek to reach all public high schools across the country, of which there are more than 7,000,” said the director.

The Ministry of Education has been implementing various measures to improve the general quality of education and services provided by public schools. Last year Minedu announced that they would be gradually increasing the amount of classroom time from 35 hours per week, to 45 hours per week. The move is meant to improve the administrative management, psychological services, and quality of education.

Now, the investment in books and libraries will allow children greater access to literature, science, and encyclopedias. This will open up opportunities for students who previously did not have a space to study and as well increase their access to educational resources.

“These books encompass children’s literature and fairy tales, and will be delivered to each classroom,” she stated.
