No takers for 25 MBBS seats in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: As the counseling for MBBS admissions in Chhattisgarh ended on Tuesday, nearly 25 seats from the government quota in private colleges of the state remained vacant.

While there are 613 seats in the state in all, including 550 in the five government run medical colleges, the state has a quota of 63 seats in the privately run, Chandulal Chandrakar Medical College (CCMC), Durg, which has 150 seats altogether. According to officials while all the 550 seats in the government run medical colleges have been filled, 25 seats in CCMC are vacant.

Officials said of the 550 MBBS seats in the government run medical colleges, 15 have been filled through the central pool and 81 from the All India quota.

Students from the state have filled the remaining 454 seats.

Incidentally, Chhattisgarh government this year did not conduct a separate entrance Pre Medical Test (PMT). All the admissions have been done through the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT).

Officials revealed that while about 15,000 to 20,000 students from the state had appeared for the AIPMT, only 760 students qualified. Of these, while many with good rankings have opted for medical colleges outside the state, others have taken admissions here. However, 25 seats still remain vacant.

Officials said most likely these vacant seats would be filled soon as migration of students takes place from one college to another.

Officials said in case the government quota seats in the private college remain vacant, they are converted to management seats and are filled by the college itself. Last year 32 seats were converted to management seats as they remained vacant after counseling.
