FG has order to close of 5 unity schools in the North-east Nigeria
Following last week''s attack on the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe State, the federal government has ordered the temporary closure of five unity schools in the North-east region. The affected colleges include Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Munguno, Borno State; Federal Government College (FGC), Potiskum, Yobe State; Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State; Federal Science and Technical College, Lassa, Borno State and Federal Science and Technical College, Michika, Adamawa State.
THISDAY had exclusively reported last week that the government was considering temporary closure of some of the eight unity colleges in the region.
It gathered that the areas where the affected schools are located are considered to be some of the hot spots in the crises which have troubled the three states under emergency rule. The Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, announced the closure yesterday in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by Wike''s Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, candidates who registered for the 2014 WASSCE, NECO SSCE and BECE in the college in Potiskum would have their examination centres relocated to FGGC in Bauchi, while those in FGGC Munguno and FGC Buni Yadi would also relocate to other schools.
"Other students who are affected by the closure of the schools but not writing public examinations, will also be relocated to FGGC Bauchi, FGGC Bajoga, FGC Maiduguri, FSTC Kafanchan and FSTC Dayi," the statement read.
The choice of the school to accommodate other affected students remains at the discretion of parents of the students, but limited to the six listed schools.
The minister also expressed condolences to the families of the students who died or were injured in the pre-dawn attack on the FGC in Yobe State. "The Federal Ministry of Education will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to improve security around federal institutions of learning," the statement added.
