Proposed budget cuts threaten education in one of Illinoiss largest industries

SPRINGFIELD New cuts may leave students wanting for education in a field bringing more than dollar 19 billion in revenue for Illinois.

 

According to a proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2017, $1.8 million will be cut from agricultural education. As much as 25 percent of all jobs in Illinois are somehow related to agriculture, whether directly or indirectly. According to a press release from the Illinois Leadership Council for Agricultural Education (ILCAE), demand for agricultural teachers in the state is exceeding supply from state universities by more than 32 percent per year.

While we acknowledge the need for drastic action on the part of our state government, we are strongly opposed to this cut, ILCAE Chair Andrew Bowman said in a release. Illinois agricultural education is the leader in combining instruction with real world experience and leadership training as recognized by the Illinois Pathways Initiative and the Illinois Business Roundtable.
